Protect Your Family: Get Vaccinated Against Measles!
Why Vaccinate?
Highly Contagious: Measles spreads easily through coughing and sneezing. You can catch it just by being in a room where an infected person has been, even up to 2 hours later.
Serious Complications: Measles can lead to severe health issues like pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and even death.
Effective Prevention: The MMRV (measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox) vaccine is safe and highly effective. Two doses provide about 97% protection against measles.
Symptoms to Watch For If you or your child has been exposed to measles, look out for these symptoms:
High Fever: Often over 104°F (40°C).
Cough, Runny Nose, Red Eyes: Early signs that appear 7-14 days after exposure.
Koplik Spots: Tiny white spots inside the mouth, appearing 2-3 days after initial symptoms.
Rash: Red spots starting at the hairline and spreading down the body, appearing 3-5 days after initial symptoms.
Take Action!
Get Vaccinated: Ensure everyone in your family is up-to-date with their MMRV vaccine. Contact Peguis Health Centre for appointment or to check if you are vaccinated against Measles.
Seek Medical Advice: If you suspect exposure or see symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
What can health Centre do?
Vaccination and Immune Globulin:
Vaccination: If the exposed person is not vaccinated, they should receive the MMR vaccine within 72 hours of exposure.
Immune Globulin: For those who cannot receive the vaccine (e.g., pregnant women, infants, immunocompromised individuals), immune globulin can be administered within six days of exposure. When this occurs the person will most likely present to a hospital for support and this can be provided there. Immune globulin is special order from the Blood Bank. This process is for Physicians of Manitoba to request.
